Small fire put out quickly

Brush fire points to danger from dry conditions in the area

MEDICINE HAT — Medicine Hat Firefighters had to deal with a small brush fire along the river in Riverside last night.

A home owner called in the fire around 6:30 in an area near Division Avenue north.

The fire was fuelled by dry leaves and may have been the result of smoking materials.

But it was put out without any damage to the trees along the river.

Though small, the fire serves as a notice of the dry conditions in the area.

Fire prevention officer Curtis Sjodin with the Medicine Hat Fire Department says “the change in temperatures in the last week has changed it from winter to almost spring like”.

Sjodin says people need to think twice before tossing a cigarette butt out of the window of their vehicle.

“We’re asking people to be very careful as this is more of a hazard now than it was even last weekend” according to Sjodin.
