MHPS officer surprises two young girls trying to spread cheer

MEDICINE HAT, AB- Two young girls in Medicine Hat got a visit from a Medicine Hat Police officer on Saturday, but it wasn’t because they were doing something wrong, instead it was to thank them for a good deed.

Sisters Haylee and Megan Walker wanted to spread a little cheer, so the girls each made a sign at their grandparents’ house during a sleepover with the words ‘ Honk if you are happy.’

“We wanted to make people happy during COVID-19,” six-year-old Megan Walker said.

The girls went outside their grandparents’ house with their signs and garnered 64 honks from those passing by.

One of the drivers who couldn’t help but notice what the girls were doing was Const. Chris Wyrostok of the Medicine Hat Police Service

“I was actually on my way to a call just up on Crescent Heights and on the way to the call I just saw them standing at the side of the road I saw that they had a little table set up so I wasn’t too sure what they were doing, but when I drove by, they each had a couple signs saying honk if you are happy so I honked my horn as I went by and it kind of made me smile and made my day a little bit,” Const. Wyrostok said.

After finishing his call, Const. Wyrostok noticed the girls were still outside, so he got out of his police car to give the girls something special as a reward for their positive actions.

“He stopped by to give us a Tim Hortons card that had $5.00 on it,” eight-year-old Haylee Walker said.

Earlier in the month, a sergeant at the Medicine Hat Police Service gave officers a number of Tim Horton’s gift cards to pass out to deserving people in the community.

“I thought that it was maybe a good thing to do for those two young girls because they were just trying to get people to be happy and honk and enjoy the nice day,” he said.

The interaction was caught on camera and quickly garnered hundreds of shares and positive comments on Facebook.

As for if the girls have any plans as to what they will buy with their new gift card, the girls are still undecided.
