MEDICINE HAT, AB- Wednesday’s windstorm that brought 109 km/hr gusts has meant a busy time for city roofers.

Nexhat Jashari of Best Hat Roofing has been inundated with calls from homeowners ever since.

“ Wednesday night I got a few calls for the next day and then the next day I got probably another 10 to 15 just like non-stop.” he said.

“It was too busy I could hardly keep up,” he added.

Jashari said many of those calls involved homeowners asking him to check their roofs to see if any shingles were missing or if there were other signs of damage.

“I had actually three of four customers call. They thought it was their roof, the shingles were all over the place and then I checked and there was no damage done at all,” he said.

With the cold weather coming it is a race around the clock to get as many projects done as possible. Jashari said roofers can repair issues in the cold, but it is not ideal.

He recommends repairs to the roof be completed as soon as possible to avoid any further damage.

“There can be damage to the plywood underneath it, if it is not tarped then the next time you do it you will see the rood will be damaged, the wood will be soft and you can actually fall through it,” he said.

During this windstorm, he said shingles that are between 10 to 15 years old have sustained the most damage because they are more deteriorated with age and lose their flexibility.

Aside from shingles, damage to siding also occurred to some homes in the city.

It is recommended according to Jashari to call ahead to ensure your home repairs can be done at a reasonable time.
