Hospitality industry wants dine-in to return, more details from government

Jan 14, 2021 | 12:20 PM

Alberta’s hospitality industry is urging the province to allow in-person again, saying if restaurants and bars are kept on the current path there will be short-term and long-term repercussions.

In an open letter to the province, the Alberta Hospitality Association asks the province to reopen dine-in with strong mitigation measures in place, allow the industry to provide Albertans a safe space, and commit to no more shutdowns and lay out a plan with milestones for a return to normality.

Restaurants and bars were closed to in-person dining as part of the enhanced public health measures that came into effect Dec. 13.

The letter says mental health has become a leading concern in the industry, with documented suicides and undocumented and rising instances of depression and anxiety.

The restrictions put in place in December were recently extended until at least Jan. 21.
