Another Alberta health-care worker has died of COVID-19, the first physician death in the province from the virus.

The death is one of the 25 announced yesterday by the province.

“I’m profoundly saddened to hear that an Alberta physician has died of COVID-19,” says Health Minister Tyler Shandro in a statement. “I want to extend my condolences to the physician’s family, friends, patients and colleagues during this difficult time.

Shandro’s statement says while the virus was not contracted at work, “we know physicians are on the front lines every day, working hard to battle the physical and emotional toll of this pandemic.”

He adds the expert care, deep compassion and tireless leadership of those on the frontlines is one of the finest examples of public service.

There were no further details released about the identity of the physician who died.

It’s the third COVID-19 death of a health-care worker in Alberta.

On Monday, Shandro issued a statement on the death of Joe Marie (Jing) Corral. The 61-year old worked as a health-care aide at the Bethany Riverview continuing-care facility in Calgary.

On Tuesday, Shandro announced the second death of a health-care worker in the province, a woman in her 50s who worked in the Edmonton Zone.
