Mavericks to start 2021 season on the road May 28

Nov 30, 2020 | 3:03 PM

The Medicine Hat Mavericks are looking at a full 56-game schedule next year.

The Western Canadian Baseball League announced its plans for 2021 on Monday.

The Mavericks are slated to open the season on May 28 in Moose Jaw against the Miller Express.

The home opener is set for the following night when the Mavericks welcome the Regina Red Sox to Athletic Park. That starts a season-long five-game home stand for the Mavs.

The post-season will be three rounds, starting Aug. 8 and ending Aug. 17. Each round will be a best-of-three affair.

The WCBL will make its mark in some new communities this year.

Sylvan Lake will see a full complement of games with the expansion Sylvan Lake Gulls joining the circuit, and the Edmonton Prospects will play in communities around that city this year due to construction ongoing on their new home in Spruce Grove.

Two Saskatchewan teams, the Yorkton Cardinals and Melville Millionaires, will not play in the 2021 season. Both were granted one-year absences for the cancelled 2020 season.

When the Mavericks take the field on May 28 it will be more than 20 months since their last game on Aug. 10, 2019.
