Former Hatter pounding pavement for Movember

MEDICINE HAT, AB – When Medicine Hat native Corbin Lightfoot pledged that he would run one kilometre for every dollar donated to his Movember page he didn’t know the toll it would take on his feet.

“I thought maybe maximum all I would raise is $500. I thought $500 would be a stretch goal to be honest with you,” he said.

He’s at $1,365 with five days to go.

How did that happen? It started in a networking meeting, says Lightfoot, an Edmonton-based senior corporate trader at Firma Foreign Exchange

“There was a guy from Montreal in my virtual meeting and he said ‘how much would it take to get to Montreal?’” Lightfoot recalled. “I Googled it, it was 3,500 kilometres and he’s just like ‘we’re going to get you to Montreal’ and … on that Wednesday within the hour I’d raised like $1,100.”

Each November men around the world keep their razor away from their upper lip to change the face of and raise awareness and money for men’s health concerns including mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Lightfoot is a member of the Medicine Hat Brewing Company’s Movember team, which has raised nearly $2,000 so far. Lightfoot is lifelong friends with team captain Kaiden Vancuren, general manager of manufacturing and distribution at the brewery.

“His family has gone through a lot of prostate and testicular cancer so I was honoured that he even asked me to come join the team and I wanted to be there for him,” said Lightfoot. “It means the world to me.”

The alarming number of suicides in his hometown was another motivation for him to raise money.

“For anyone struggling with mental health issues, especially as Covid 19 separates us, let’s find reasons to stay connected. If you’re struggling please reach out and talk to somebody. If you know someone who isn’t doing well, please reach out to them,” reads Lightfoot’s Movember page.

As for the running, he’s determined to be a man of his word. So far he’s run about 70 kilometres, and jokes he may not get rest of it done in November.

He’s not letting winter get in his way, either.

“I went out and got a really nice pair of winter running shoes with gaiters on them so snow can’t get in and ice nails on the bottom so I can’t slip,”
