Alberta Parks warns of avalanche risk in Cypress Hills

Nov 13, 2020 | 5:04 PM

Alberta Parks is warning of the potential for avalanches in the Cypress Hills.

“A large snowfall combined with strong winds has increased the risk of avalanches near roads, steep side hills in creeks, Hidden Valley Ski Resort, and other areas in the Cypress Hills region. While avalanches may not be large, they have the potential to bury a person, which can be fatal,” reads a Facebook post from Alberta Parks.

It’s expected the snow will eventually settle and strengthen, but this will take a few days.

Until then Alberta Parks says to avoid being on or under slopes that are greater than 15 degrees (if you can slide down so can the snow) and if you see avalanches around you (even small ones), that’s a good indication that you are in avalanche terrain.
