A tough slog on the highways and byways as snowstorm slams the Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Sunday saw one of the biggest early November dumps of snowfall on the city over the past two decades, according to Environment Canada.

Truckers packed the city’s truck stops until they had no place to park other than nearby roads. Many others were stuck in ditches on the side of the highway along with passenger vehicles.

City streets weren’t too much better with no shortage of cars getting stuck across the city.

Ken Pollock has been crossing the country for the past three decades and has experienced more than a few of Canada’s notorious winter storms.

But yesterday’s storm was particularly bad, said Pollock of the roads Sunday from Swift Current to Medicine Hat.

“It was just mayhem,” he said. “Just trucks off the road, in the ditch and I just drove along on the side and just stayed toward the gravel to get myself at least to town.”

Some weren’t so lucky and those who were found themselves stuck at city truck stops waiting to be dug out.

At the corner of Seventh Avenue and Sixth Street Monday morning, Roxane Lorenz and her partner Shane Matuska were helping to clear the sidewalks of the entire intersection.

And they help out numerous vehicles stuck at the intersection just up from the Park Lane Motor Hotel.

“Many, many vehicles we’ve had to push out,” said Lorenz. “It took nine people to push out an ambulance and you don’t even know where the graders are. It’s hard. It’s hard.”

Jared Derman was armed with a 4×4 Jeep and a tow rope, pulling out a stuck delivery vehicle nearby.

“We’re around the hospital and intersections are packed and busy and you’ve got an EMS truck sitting there waiting to go,” said Derman. “You kind of want to get things cleared up quickly as you can. So, someone has to come in. Someone has to get out so they can.”

City crews will continue to clear city streets today and into the early hours of tomorrow.
