Health Statutes Amendment Act

Province seeks to modernize health legislation

Nov 5, 2020 | 3:03 PM

The province has introduced legislation aimed at making the health system more efficient and responsive, and support and protect patients.

Among the measures in Bill 46 are regulating health-care aides as a separate profession within the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta, separating regulatory colleges from associations, and increased sharing of health information among authorized organizations and professionals in Alberta Netcare.

The bill will also establish a centralized, public registry of health providers.

Alberta health advocate Janice Harrington applauds that move, saying the central online registry of health professionals will enable Albertans to find a health professional more easily and access health services sooner.”

The Hospitals Act would also be repealed with applicable parts moved into the Health Facilities Act and change the name of the ABC Benefits Corporation Act to the Alberta Blue Cross Act.
