ASCA collecting feedback on how the return to school is going

Oct 21, 2020 | 5:23 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Alberta School Councils’ Association (ASCA) is asking parents and guardians how the return to school is going so far.

A survey will help gauge how parents and guardians are finding the COVID-19 protocols and how kids are adjusting.

Alicia Doud, Secretary/Treasurer of the parent society at Ecole St. John Paul II in Medicine Hat says as for the local council, they had a meeting this week about the back to school topic.

In general, she says parents at their council are finding that everything is going really well.

And personally, she says the school has been well organized and well informed. Adding that the school and board have been very good about keeping lines of communication open.

“The kids adjust so smoothly to these changes. They’re just happy to be back in school. There’s been some positive feedback from staff in terms of things like staggering recesses, easing the flow in the hallways, that will probably stay on after these COVID-19 protocols are gone.”

Doud has three children in grades three, five, and six.

She says they have also adjusted quite well to mask-wearing.

Adding that the different mask patterns and accessories help.

“It is what it is and what we make it as parents to them. So if we can make it fun and the “new normal” I think that’s the catchphrase of 2020, then they (kids) go with it and it’s not a problem,” Doud added.

Doud also notes parent councils are more than just fundraising. They include principal and teacher liaisons and is a way to have open communication with administration, she says, “About what’s going on in the school, protocols, programs, and background stuff that’s getting worked on.”

The ASCA parent survey can be found by visiting this link. The deadline is Friday, November 6.
