MEDICINE HAT , AB- It’s an event that sees local grandmothers or grandothers lend a hand to grandmothers living in Africa who are raising children affected by the HIV AIDS pandemic. Now through their eleventh year of hosting a pop-up quilting sale, more funds will be distributed towards helping the cause.

In their years of hosting the annual fabric sale, The Hat Grannies, which consists of 12 core members have raised over $ 63,000

This year the group raised approximately $2500.

“ That’s a fantastic amount, and great support from our community too and because we don’t spend very much or any on advertising, and we got the space for free it’s almost all profit,” said Kathy Dawson of Hat Grannies for Africa

Fabrics for the fundraiser are all received through donations. All money raised goes towards the Stephen Lewis Foundation, an organization that has partnered with 325 community-based organizations in Africa since 2003.

“The Stephen Lewis Foundation is a grassroots kind of fundraising for communities in Africa where it is needed. They get programs to help the grandmothers that are raising sometimes very large families, keep the kids in school, keep their medications going to get appropriate treatment for them and support them so they are not continually devastated by this epidemic,” Kathy Dawson of Hat Grannies for Africa said.

The Hat for Grannies fundraiser was held downtown at 617- 2nd street from 10 a.m. to 2p.m.
