Two-day job fair

Renewable energy firm looking to hire dozens of workers for area projects

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s been a rough few years for job-seekers in Medicine Hat but a renewable energy company will be holding a job fair in the city looking to fill about 100 positions.

Borea Construction is the country’s largest company focused on building in the renewable sector and has been involved in a number of the projects in southeastern Alberta, including those near Bow Island, Suffield and Brooks.

The two-day job fair set to start on Sunday will be focused on upcoming projects in Tilley, Jenner and Hays.

It’s good news and a long time coming says the job fair’s organizer, Jodie Engbert, YMCA Employment Centre manager.

“COVID has obviously taken a toll on our community and we’re in the business of getting job seekers back to work,” said Engbert. “The job advertisements have been few and far between so we are very excited about an opportunity for a mass hiring event for the community to get people back to work.”

The event is part of a partnership led by the YMCA, which has also partnered with Medicine Hat College and the province for the event to help get Hatters and employers connected.

The budding renewable sector will likely see more hiring take place outside of the Borea’s current project hiring, according to Shelly Drefs, MHC representative at the college’s Employment and Career Centre.

“I think that industries in a lot of the different provinces and different employers within Canada are looking at the renewable sector for sure – different ways to diversify what we can offer as a country in terms of clean energy and opportunities for job seekers. I think going forward, we’re going to hear more projects like these.”

The job fair will be taking into account COVID-19 health and safety precautions and, as such, participants are being asked to bring their masks along with their resumes with social distancing also being practised.

The Borea job fair will take place at the old Nissan Dealership across from the Medicine Hat Regional Airport on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

No pre-registration is required with on-the-spot interviews possible.
