MEDICINE HAT, AB – Any quilters who like to hibernate and create over the winter months can stock up on their supplies next weekend.

The Hat Grannies for Africa are hosting a Pop Up Quilting Fabric Sale downtown on Oct. 17.

Organizers say the sale will offer only quilting cottons, cotton blends and a variety of quilting notions at exceptional prices.

The sale will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 617 Second St. SE. Admission is $1, and the event is cash-only. Organizers say all Alberta Health protocols (and then some) will be followed and masks must be worn.

The Hat Grannies for Africa dedicate personal time and effort to raise money for the Grandmother to Grandmother Campaign, an initiative of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The funds are distributed to community-based groups in sub-Saharan Africa that support grandmothers who are charged with raising children affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. These same groups are now also helping their communities deal with the COVID pandemic.

There are more than 240 grandmother groups across Canada raising funds and awareness for these African grandmothers. The Hat Grannies group has raised and contributed $63,997 since the group began just over 10 years ago.
