MEDICINE HAT, AB – The first phase in a long-anticipated Medicine Hat College expansion is set to break ground as soon as next month.

The Health, Wellness and Athletics Expansion (HWAE) project’s first phase will include a new fitness room, expanded first responder and health student training facilities and an Indigenous and community space.

The $8-million expansion will result in health training facilities like no other in the region, say the college’s vice president Wayne Resch.

Resch says the first phase of the project is part of a larger expansion the college is hoping to build out in the coming years.

“This is part of a bigger health, wellness expansion we’ve been working on for quite some time now at the college,” said Resch. “The whole project is a $23-, $24-million project that included a new gymnasium, running track, some further enhanced health and wellness space.”

The expansion will build on the east end of the college and is anticipated to be completed sometime before the end of 2021.
