Harvesting horseradish: Event looks to get rid of weed, provide tasty condiment

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s a tasty condiment for many roast beef lovers but horseradish’s namesake plant can be anything but pleasant if it escapes the confines of a garden and runs wild on native landscapes.

A new group in the city is hosting an event on Saturday, hoping to please fans of the savoury bite of horseradish while getting rid of what is becoming a weed invading a local coulee.

Transition Medicine Hat’s coordinator Rob Gardner says harvesting the horseradish fits in with the group’s goal of encouraging sustainable food production.

“Sustainability means self-reliance in part and re-skilling – learning skills people have lost. Things like growing your own food,” said Gardner. “That’s a basic skill and this is a fun way to move in that direction. The horseradish has already been grown here and all we have to do is harvest it.”

The horseradish harvesting event takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. near the Medicine Hat Tourism Centre.

Participants are asked to bring a sturdy shovel, sharp knife and cutting board.
