APARC dealing with influx of cats

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Alberta Pound and Rescue Centre in Medicine Hat is looking for forever homes following an influx in cats to their facility.

This week 44 cats came into their care, thanks to what APARC calls a busy kitten season which usually starts in early spring and summer.

” We’ve had a huge influx in our intake. A lot of it has been trapped or what’s deemed feral cats . We’ve also had a lot of moms come in that are pregnant and have litters of kittens, as well as kittens who come in without a mom. Some of them do require bottle feeding and things like that, so we have been super overwhelmed with cats at the moment,” Christina Young with APARC said.

The influx in cats during the early spring and summer, according to Young, can be attributed to stray cats born outdoors and those who are not properly spayed or neutered.

” Every summer we see it. It seems that this summer our kitten season started a little early actually, and then it tapered off and we thought ‘ oh you know maybe we are getting ahead of the overpopulation, unfortunately it was just the tip of the iceberg., and we got slammed,” Young said.

Cats that are ready for adoption receive wellness and medical check. They are also vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. Spaying and Neutering also occur on select felines if the age requirement is met.
