Province-wide, 418 cases were reported in Monday’s update from Dr. Deena Hinshaw. There were 105 cases confirmed Sept. 11, 173 on Sept. 12 and 140 on Sept. 13.

The total number of COVID-19 cases across the province stands at 15,833. There are 1,538 active cases, up 94 from Friday, and 14,041 recovered cases, up 323.

“Although our confirmed case numbers from Saturday and Sunday are somewhat higher than normal that they have been in the past while, put in context of the over 33,000 samples run in these two days these identified case numbers are still manageable by public health,” said Hinshaw.

The chief medical officer of health spoke to the increased anxiety that many Albertans are dealing with during this time, including the impacts on students and teachers who are dealing with intense scrutiny during school re-entry.

“I want to be very clear that we continue to act quickly to limit the spread of COVID-19 in schools and that our commitment to transparency in reporting should not be seen as a heightened risk of COVID-19 in school environments,” she said, adding that community transmission levels have been higher in recent weeks and cases are being identified in all sectors of society.

“What matters are the interventions in place to prevent spread in the school environment.”

Hinshaw said the interventions are being monitored and necessary changes will be made.

As of Monday, Alberta Health Services has confirmed 42 cases that were present at 35 schools while infectious. Three new outbreaks have been confirmed since Friday – two at schools in Calgary and one in Edmonton.

The website Support Our Students is tracking instances of cases in schools across the province. The only local school on the list remains Ecole St. John Paul II, which was added in late August.

Hinshaw said it won’t be a surprise to see a second wave this fall and Albertans control what that will look like.

“Whether we see a sharp spike in cases, or whether we continue to see ripples where numbers rise, level off then fall, this depends on how dedicated we all are to following the measures in place and how we collectively respond when cases are rising.”

There are currently 37 Albertans in hospital, seven in ICU. There have been 254 deaths, an increase of one from Friday.

The province conducted 46,126 tests in the past 72 hours – 12,757 on Sept. 11, 18,919 on Sept. 12 and 14,451 on Sept. 13.
