Trial to start in February

Child pornography trial date set for former head of downtown agency

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A trial date has been set for the former head of the City Centre Development Agency.

Wayne Smith is accused of accessing and possessing child pornography.

Smith pleaded not guilty to the charges earlier this year.

His trial is scheduled to begin Feb. 17, 2021.

The child pornography charges were laid in November 2018, two years after his tenure at the CCDA ended.

During his stormy tenure at the CCDA between 2014 and 2016 there were allegations of workplace sexual harassment by staff at the agency-run Monarch Theatre. An investigation found no substantiation of criminal acts.
