MEDICINE HAT, AB – Both natural gas and electricity rates are going up this month.

Utility rates were released by the City of Medicine Hat on Tuesday.

The natural gas rate for the month is set at $2.885 per gigajoule, up from $1.755 in August. That’s an increase of about 60 per cent.

Electricity in September will cost 7.498 cents per kilowatt hour. That’s up about 16 per cent from the 6.462 cents charged in August.

Both rates are determined based on the average set by other providers in the province.

The natural gas price is in the middle of the $2.492 set by Direct Energy and the $2.685 set by AltaGas.

The electricity price falls between the high of 7.684 cents set by Epcor (Edmonton) and the 7.167 cents set by Enmax.
