Work on sanitary sewer system to start in September

MEDICINE HAT, AB – City crews will begin a month-long project on Sept. 8 to improve the sanitary sewer system between Higdon Avenue and Carry Drive SE.

The city says existing concrete infrastructure has experienced degradation from high sulphate levels.

“The repair requires draining and cleaning the existing pipe, inserting an epoxy liner through the sewer system between two manholes, and then curing it in place with steam,” reads a release from the city. “The technology allows full restoration of the sewer trunk without having to excavate and expose the piping.”

This work continues the Carry Drive lining project that was finished in 2018 and will be completed in segments to minimize traffic disruption. Water and sewer services will not be affected, except for emergency activities and short, scheduled interruptions.

The work is expected to be completed in mid-October.

Motorists are asked to follow detours in place during construction and plan routes in advance.

Residents are reminded to stay at least two metres from construction crews and allow them space to work safely.
