A look at what the classroom could look like when students return

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Schools across the province have been finalizing plans for the safe re-entry of school as students return next week.

Cody Young is the Vice Principal of Mother Teresa School in Medicine Hat.

He says school administrators have been working really hard over the last several days and weeks with school re-entry plans.

Young is also a grade 5/6 teacher and says each school re-entry plan will look a little different. It depends on student numbers within the school and school layout.

“So when you enter a classroom you’re going to see rows of desks facing forward and as much spacing as possible that we can use in the classroom. And when spacing is not possible masks can be worn and are provided.”

Young says there will be sanitization stations outside every classroom.

“Students will be expected when they come into the school that they will be wearing a mask. Before they enter the classroom they’ll be expected to sanitize (their hands).”

When students come into the classroom they can then take off their masks when they’re seated at their desk, Young told Chat News.

And upon leaving the classroom, students will put their mask back on, sanitize, and proceed where they need to go.

“For the most part students will be staying in the classroom to avoid touch points spreading throughout the school,” Young added.

He says mask-wearing by students, teachers, and staff will be the big part of school re-entry plans, as well as hand sanitizing.

Within Mother Teresa School, recesses will be staggered, and Young adds the whole school won’t be out for one recess.

“We’ve staggered about half the classes at one recess and another recess happens about 15 minutes later with the rest of the students.”

Young says the same thing will happen at lunchtime, “When students are eating lunch, the other half of students will be outside and then there’s a flip-flop that happens where those classes will come back to their classrooms and sanitize.”

According to Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education, it is mandatory to wear a mask on all MHCBE school busses for all students K-12.
