Non-essential transit service returns, single-ride ticket price increases

MEDICINE HAT. AB – Transit fares will be going up beginning next month as the city will be allowing for non-essential bus travel again.

Health restrictions put in place saw city officials advise bus service should only be used for essential travel to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

But starting Sept. 1, those restrictions will be lifted and the price of a single-fare ride will rise from $1 to $2 – still less than the $3.25 cost prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.

But due to continued health regulations, transit tickets and transfers won’t be used with the reduced cost to reflect the cost for each single bus ride.

Due to that, the city is encouraging transit users to purchase monthly bus passes which are currently on sale.

“Passengers who may require transfers are encouraged to purchase and use monthly bus passes,” said Mike Spicer, manager of transit services, in a release. “We must continue to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. A monthly pass allows passengers unlimited rides per month while decreasing contact with cash, tickets and transfers.”

Transit service will still be operating on a modified schedule with Monday to Friday running on the Saturday schedule. Saturday and Sunday will be running on Sunday’s schedule.

Monthy passes for September will cost $70.50 for adults, $43.75 for seniors, $61 for post-secondary students and $38.75 for youth.

Post-secondary students also have an option for a semester pass for $232.
