Fire at duplex being treated as arson

Aug 20, 2020 | 11:07 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat police are investigating a Wednesday house fire as arson.

Police say members of the Medicine Hat Police Service and Medicine Hat Fire Service responded to a structure fire in the 2500 block of 22nd Avenue SE at about 6 p.m. on Aug. 19.

The fire was contained to one side of the four-plex and no one was injured.

MHPS Major Crimes Staff-Sgt. Chad Holt says there were enough suspicious evidence to launch an arson investigation into the fire, adding police are currently collecting statements and interviews.

“We’re just waiting for some information back from the fire investigator team as well. Once we have all that, we’ll obviously be looking for who was responsible, identifying that person and laying charges if appropriate,” said Holt.

It’s the second structure fire this week that police are investigating. Early Monday morning police and firefighters were called out to an apartment fire at 98 Sprague Way SE.

However Holt says police do not believe that fire is connected to Wednesday’s in any way.

Police ask who may have information that could assist the investigations to contact the MHPS at 403-529-8481 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800 -222-8477 (TIPS). Tips may also be submitted (anonymously if preferred) through the MHPS Mobile App, which can be downloaded on the Apple App or Google Play store.
