Province orders 1.7 million reusable masks for coming school year

EDMONTON, AB – Alberta’s education minister says the province has placed orders for 1.7 million reusable masks for the coming school year.

Adriana LaGrange says some of the order is being filled by I-F-R, an Alberta-based company, while the rest will come from retailer Old Navy.

The province has directed that students in Grades 4 to 12 and school staff will be required to wear a mask in all shared and common areas of schools.

LaGrange says the government began preparations to buy the masks even while the province’s chief medical officer of health was still considering scientific evidence about their use.

A government release states: “Both Alberta Education and the Provincial Operations Centre (POC) are confident that masks, sanitizer, thermometers, and face shields will be distributed to school divisions prior to the resumption of classes. Students, schools and staff will receive their PPE for the beginning of the school year.”
