Hatter wants to see pet-themed room to comfort children at hospital

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A long-time supporter of animals in Medicine Hat is turning her attention to children, and bringing her love of animals with her.

Kristina Hyde is working with the Medicine Hat & District Health Foundation to bring a pet-themed room to the children’s floor at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

Hyde got the idea after touring the ward and seeing that local service clubs had paid to have some rooms themed while others were more bare.

“I have done a lot of volunteer work with animals in Medicine Hat so it gave me an idea that I love pets and they instantly make me happy,” said Hyde. “So I pictured a room with all different pet pictures so the kids could laugh and point at them and bring some happiness at a time when it’s probably not very happy in their life.”

The room will be called We Love Pets and Hyde says that as well as giving the children in the room something to smile about the photos will also distract them from the pain they’re feeling, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Working with Titanium Sign & Design as well as the health foundation, the idea to create vinyl frames to showcase the photos of animals came about.

You can get your pet’s photo on the wall for a donation of $100. Hyde says only photos of pets (no humans) will be accepted and is allowing only one photo per $100 donation.

Any more left after the room is designed will go toward any other purchases the children’s floor may need.

She encourages people with pets who have passed away to submit their photos as well, saying it could serve as a nice memorial for them.

Tax receipts will be issued through the health foundation.
