MEDICINE HAT, AB – Like many businesses and organizations, charities have also had to pivot during the pandemic.

The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Medicine Hat was closed but re-opened on June 23 with partial staff and shortened hours that are Tuesday-Saturday 10 am-4 pm.

The public donation bins in the city are still closed, but residents can drop off items at the store’s back loading dock Tuesday-Saturday between 1-4 pm.

The Salvation Army continues to serve two meals a day, 7 days a week.

Director of Business Administration Connie Dulle says throughout the past couple of months they’ve had the same number of people coming in for meals.

Serving over 100 meals a day.

She says it’s been a little different when serving with physical distancing.

“So the meals right now are in to-go containers at the door. The shelter people can come inside so we do still serve the community meals. And people have been really patient with coming to the door and waiting for their turn to pick up their meal. So I think overall other than losing that social interaction, they’ve been very patient and it’s gone pretty well.”

Dulle says there has been an increase of people over the past few weeks and suspects that because some are still not able to go back to work.

The Salvation Army also received $42, 818 this month from Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund and the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta.

Dulle says that money will continue to support their food programs.

Adding that the community has been great with personal donations as well and a lot of the family services work they do for the resource centre is with the money they raise at Christmas.
