Sport impact survey on now for local families and athletes

She says sports councils across Alberta created the survey to get an idea of how people are feeling with no sports or events happening.

The survey was posted last week and they’re getting lots of responses.

“People are enjoying more family time, more meals together, and stuff like that so it is nice to see that families have found a way to kind of take the benefit of being away from sports and having more time together. But definitely noticing a lot that kids are less motivated right now. Their schedules are all out of wack and a lot of kids just want to get back to sports which is really hard.”

Brake says they will be sharing the survey results with municipal, provincial, and federal leaders.

And from there, they hope to know more about what sports will look like in the fall.

But it’s hard to anticipate what will happen.

“We’ve tried to work with sports councils, we’re working with national organizations to find out where things are going to go and I think everyone says it’s a wait and see right now. I think our provincial government is the one that’s going to tell us where we can go,” Brake said.

Right now there are some sports camps happening this summer by following public health guidelines.

Brake says the Mavericks are hosting a camp with cohorts of 50.

Adding that pickleball is going right now, soccer is doing mini-leagues, some gymnastics and cheerleading are also on this summer.

Meantime, Brake says the council is focusing heavily on a facility guide which they hope to release sometime soon when they are able.

“It’s going to feature all of the facilities in Medicine Hat that you can rent and a one-stop-shop for anyone who wants to host an event.”
