COVID-19 fines

MHPS have not laid any COVID-19 charges at this time

MEDICINE HAT, AB – As COVID-19 cases rise across the province over the past couple weeks, government and health officials continue to enforce the message and importance of following public health guidelines.

If you do not follow AHS self-isolation orders, fines in Alberta vary between $1,000 to $1,200 for an individual.

Medicine Hat Police Service has not laid any COVID-19 charges as of yet.

But Inspector Brent Secondiak says they have been close a couple of times.

He says police had a couple of people who were enforced with quarantine orders and they didn’t like the orders.

They said they didn’t want to quarantine for periods of time.

Secondiak says they are giving more reminders to the public.

“For us, it’s more about education during these times. We would charge someone if we had to if they totally disregarded the orders.”

Secondiak adds that the conversations they’ve had have been successful.

“Alberta Health Services is charging businesses so if there are any issues with a business, company, or large group of people that’s Alberta Health Services. We’re dealing with individuals.”

Secondiak says fines are substantially greater for a business.

He also reminds residents to follow the guidelines of health officials like staying two metres apart, wear a mask if appropriate, and continued cleaning and sanitizing practices.
