Big idea behind support for local business

Jul 24, 2020 | 4:09 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s an ambitious goal: see $100 million spent at local businesses in a single day across the nation.

And that day is Saturday.

It’s called The Big Spend and is being backed by chambers of commerce from across Canada.

The big idea behind The Big Spend is to support community-owned businesses that support the community.

It’s an idea the manager of the Madhatter Coffee Roastery says she is all in for.

“That investment when you are purchasing – you’re really fighting for your own people,” said Leanne Eskola.

“You’re saying, you are a Hatter too and I really want to build you up right now. It’s that $5 latte that you buy that can do amazing things for not only the people who own the business but it trickles down through the whole community.”

The Big Spend is asking people to record their purchases on its website and post on social media using #TheBigSpend hashtag.
