Summer day camps underway

MEDICINE HAT, AB – We’re already into mid-summer, and families in Medicine Hat have another option to keep the little ones entertained with summer day camps in the city.

Based on community need at the beginning of July, the YMCA just ran one day camp this month.

The July camp at Dr. Ken Sauer School is ongoing over the next two weeks.

Before & After School Program Manager Victoria Potter says the program will run at two locations in August.

They will be at Southview School and Connaught School.

She says camps run with 26 children with licensed child care professionals.

Parents and guardians check temperatures of their children before coming to the program and screen for symptoms.

Potter says where possible, physical distancing practices and activities will happen.

But while also knowing that children will be children.

“They have their own craft bags and their own sensory supplies like play-dough. We’re not sharing anything like that among the children. If the children want to play with their play-dough together they’re sitting at tables further apart with their own. And they’ve got their own markers for the week. Anything we can’t sanitize here we send it home with the children.”

With support from the United Way of Southeast Alberta, the cost for the summer day camps has been reduced by 25 percent and is $142 dollars per week.

Potter says the kids have been excited to be back.

“I’ve gotten feedback from parents saying their children were super exhausted at the end of the day going from that transition from being at home to being active and running around all day has been really good. And it’s been interesting watching the friendships that have been growing and blossoming through the program so it’s great to have the children back.”

Registration can be done on the YMCA website.
