MEDICINE HAT, AB – Residents who wish to give back to their community have a chance to do so by helping out Medicine Hat Police Victim Services Unit.

Victim Services Program Coordinator Laura Deschamps says they’re not specifically short on volunteers, but they are looking to have a larger pool.

And to ensure individuals receive the service they expect from the victim assistance unit.

They currently have 20 active members in three different areas in victim assistance including crisis support, in-station office support, and court support.

Deschamps says at the discretion of a police officer, volunteers can also be called on-scene.

“There are lots of areas for individuals can come in and either do in-office or in-station support. Or work through as a call-out and assist out in areas where needed.”

Applications are open to anyone and there will be background and reference checks.

Deschamps adds COVID-19 public health protocols will be in place like sanitizing and personal protective equipment.

The deadline is July 29.
