MEDICINE HAT, AB- A local diner is sparking controversy after a sign posted in its store window asks customers not to wear masks inside.

The sign is posted outside of Windy’s Diner.

The owner of the establishment declined to comment to CHAT News, instead referring to their defense posted on Facebook in response to a customer inquiry about the sign.

In the Facebook post the owner directed CHAT News to the owner writes in part, “I have absolutely no problem with people entering to do take out orders while wearing the face covering of their choice. My concerns begin with people entering with the mask, ordering and sitting inside to eat. It is difficult to eat or drink while wearing the mask so the patron will remove the mask, and in most cases lay it on the table while they eat. This action causes any and all bacteria collected within the mask to redistribute throughout the store and jeopardize other patrons.”

The owner furthered his position, claiming, “It has been scientifically stated that the mask Does Not protect the wearer from the Covid 19 Virus as the openings in the mask are too large to stop them. I agree, however that masks will prevent the spread, to a degree, if the wearer happens to sneeze. I suggest to everyone reading this, and other posts, that if they have symptoms or even a cough, that they remain home at least until the symptoms subside,” the post reads.

In conclusion, the post reads, “masks collect all bacteria which each human naturally expels with each breath. This bacteria, along with the CO2 is collected within the confines of the mask are “recycled” back into the body and cause harm and deprive the body of vital oxygen.”

Alberta Health Services has been recommending the use of non-medical masks in public when it is challenging to maintain proper physical distancing of at least two metres apart.

On its website AHS notes that wearing a homemade or non-medical mask is a useful tool to prevent the spread of COVID-19 but, “It hasn’t been proven that masks protect the person wearing it, but it can help protect people from being exposed to your germs.”

In a phone interview with CHAT NEWS Today, Alberta Health also notes mask use is not mandatory, and enforcing the use of masks remains at the business owner’s owner discretion.

” So mask use is not mandatory in restaurants, there is no requirement for restaurants to have patrons wear masks. It’s disappointing that anyone would be asked to remove a mask, because we strongly recommend them anytime physical distancing isn;t possible but there is no requirement that masks be worn in restuarants,” Tom McMillan, assistant director of communications for Alberta Health said.

Alberta Health says it’s important for people to know how to wear their mask properly including putting it on and taking it off, and that information is readily available on their website.
