Hatters eager to celebrate Canada Day despite cancellations

MEDICINE HAT AB, – Kin Coulee Park come Canada Day is usually bustling with a sea of red and white.

Fireworks light up the sky, and so too does the people showing their appreciation for the true north strong and free.

But this year, celebrating will be a little different. Canada Day celebrations were canceled in April in order to comply with COVID-19 health regulations.

But Hatters are still planning to mark Canada’s big birthday.

“Just hang out with the family, go for a walk take it easy,” one Hatter said.

” We are going camping,” said another.

” I’m probably going golfing,” said one man.

While the usual fireworks may not go off at Kin Coulee Park, events are still happening in the city .

At the Interpretive Centre at Police Point Park, rock painting will be taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for people of all ages.

“If you want to go and do the rock painting, you can go online to our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and pick a time slot and give us a call to make a reservation and we provide all the materials,” said Park Interpreter Morgan Fishley.

A drive- by Canada Day Celebration is also planned. According to their Facebook page, the parade will begin at Twist & Flip Gymnastics in Redcliff at 11 a.m. and finish at Kin Coulee park.

Motorists are encouraged to decorate their vehicles with red and white.

No trailers with people on them are allowed and all rules of the road will need to be followed .

For those looking to get their fireworks fix, fireworks will be taking place in Brooks at the Centennial Regional Arena. A drive-in movie featuring “Dolittle” will be playing at 10 p.m. in the south parking lot followed by fireworks at 11 p.m.
