City businesses can double up on city, provincial relief programs

EDMONTON – A new provincial aid package that will help small- and medium-sized businesses pay for costs associated with COVID-19 protections will be open for applications in Medicine Hat starting July 1 while surrounding area businesses will be able to apply one day earlier.

The Small and Medium Enterprise Relaunch Grant announced on Sunday will allow businesses to apply for up to $5,000 in relief payments to cover the costs of equipment and materials related to preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus. It can also be able to be used to pay for rent and wages.

Eligible recipients include businesses, co-operatives and non-profits which have less than 500 employees and have seen a 50 per cent or more drop in revenue connected to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new aid package mirrors one the City of Medicine Hat launched earlier this month as part of the first phase of a $2 million grant package for businesses.

The municipal grant will allow businesses to apply for between $500 and $15,000 in funds to offset costs associated with COVID-19 protection materials.

A spokesperson for the ministry of economic development stated the grant is compatible with those offered by other levels of government which will allow eligible Medicine Hat companies to apply to both the municipal and provincial grants.
