Medicine Hat College creates online COVID-19 time capsule

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s hard to believe that over the last four months we have been living through a pandemic and also a piece of history.

To keep local historical records, Medicine Hat College (MHC) has created a website for residents to share what they have experienced during this time.

The website Medicine Hat COVID Experiences will hold as an online archive.

Residents can submit their digital memories like photos, videos, voice memos, and stories for the online time capsule.

The site was created when the college’s art and design students were not able to complete their regular work-term due to the pandemic.

Director of teaching and learning at MHC Jason Openo says it’s a time to look back and remember, as it all happened so quickly.

Including the closure of the college in March and turning to online learning for students.

He says it has been a personal experience for many with self-isolation, working from home, and physical distancing.

“Have we had a chance to really process that, have we had a chance to make meaning from that experience? And I really hope as the community shares their photos, videos, and creative works that we get a chance to see what this has meant to a lot of people,” he said.

Sierra Zukowski is an Art & Design student who is the creator/designer of the website.

She is in her last summer semester of the visual communications program and will receive the bachelor of applied arts at the end of August.

She says they started the website project at the beginning of May.

“Now the website is launched and is all ready to go. It will be an ongoing project where people can continue to submit submissions for as long as they’d like. It definitely is still relevant I think, even though things are starting to open up again. We’re defiantly not out of the clear yet for COVID-19.

Zukowski created the website, visuals, illustrations, and is marketing the project on social media.

Openo adds many colleges and libraries have been collecting and creating archives of the pandemic.
