Vehicle traffic restricted on Finlay Bridge as project gets underway

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The 112-year-old Finlay Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic for three months as the city’s iconic river span gets a facelift.

Starting today, cross-river traffic will be diverted to either the Maple Avenue Bridge or Trans-Canada Bridge as workers begin removing the current asphalt surface and replacing it with a concrete deck.

The $1.7 million project will also see work on the bridge’s abutments and bearings which secure the structure to the piers undergo work.

While vehicle traffic will be restricted, foot traffic will continue to be open on at least one side of the bridge during the construction period.

The work on the bridge is expected to be completed by the end of September and is designed to lengthen the lifespan of the span over the South Saskatchewan River.

The bridge is named after one of the city’s early mayors, William Finlay, who also served as the province’s first minister of agriculture.
