Goats to tackle Police Point weeds
MEDICINE HAT, AB – They are one of the oldest forms of domesticated livestock and now the City of Medicine Hat will be putting them to work at Police Point Park.
The city announced Monday they will turnout a herd of goats at the natural area in an effort to combat leafy spurge, an invasive weed, during a two-week pilot project.
The 150 head goat herd has been trained to eat the noxious weed and the animal’s digestive track can destroy the seeds, according to a release from the city.
Attempts at stemming the spread of leafy spurge have been unsuccessful due to the terrain of Police Point Park, according to the city, and the inability to use herbicides near natural water bodies such as the South Saskatchewan River.
