Edmonton police say one of its officers has been charged with assaulting a person during an arrest last year.

Police say Const. Michael Partington, who has been with the force for four years, was arrested Tuesday.

The charge stems from an arrest that took place on Aug. 27, 2019.

Police say they received video of the arrest two days later and an in-depth investigation was conducted by its Professional Standards Branch.

They say the investigation found that the level of force described in the police report was not consistent with the force showed in the video.

The video was forwarded in March to Crown prosecutors, who recommended the criminal charge against Partington on Friday.

Police say Partington was released from custody with an appearance notice and has since been relieved from duty without pay.
