MEDICINE HAT — It was a day to celebrate at The Mustard Seed. Funding from the federal government totaling $40,000 was presented to the organization this afternoon.

The Community Foundation of Canada alongside the Canadian Red Cross and The United Way Centraide Canada are three organizations tasked with distributing nearly $350 million in aide across Canada. The funds are used to support charities working with vulnerable populations during the pandemic.

” Our committee worked really hard to make sure that the funds were being dispersed fairly and across the region . The Mustard Seed does do great work in our community,” said Niki Gray, community engagement coordinator with the Community Foundation of Southeast Alberta.

For The Mustard Seed, the funds are coming at a time when many are needing it most.

“Our plan is we are going to continue to do what we are doing which is serving take-out style meals for our vulnerable, homeless citizens of Medicine Hat. We’ve been doing it prior to COVID-19 and when COVID-19 came, the need became stronger, almost three times as many,” said Colette Eirich, managing director, Mustard Seed Medicine Hat.

The Mustard Seed supports about 85 to 100 people daily through their programs.

“Our ages range from about one, infants to I think my oldest is about 87. So we have
every age range that is in Medicine Hat that is needing this right now,” Eirich said.
