Tornado warning issued for Taber, Newell County

Update : The tornado alert has ended for parts of Southern Alberta, according to Alberta Emergency Alert

Update: Environment Canada has expanded the tornado warning to include the following areas:

  • Co. of Newell near Bassano
  • Co. of Newell near Brooks Rosemary and Duchess
  • Co. of Newell near Scandia and Kinbrook Island Prov. Park
  • M.D. of Taber near Enchant
  • Vulcan Co. near Lomond Travers and Little Bow Reservoirs
  • Vulcan Co. near Milo

Alberta Emergency Alert says a possible tornado is located 30 km south of Brooks and is moving northward at 60 km/h.

“Seek shelter immediately in a basement or reinforced structure. Get low and put as many walls between yourself and the storm as possible. Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls. If you are on the highway and cannot avoid the tornado, seek shelter in a ditch or ravine,” Alberta Emergency Alert said.

Update 8:40 p.m.- Environment Canada has expanded the tornado warning to Newell County near Tilley and Rolling Hills as well as the county of Newell near Scandia and Kinbrook Island Prov. Park and the M.D. of Taber near Enchant.

Environment Canada says meteorologists are tracking a thunderstorm near Taber that is moving northwards at 60 km/ hr.

“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately,” said Environment Canada

TABER AB- A section of southern Alberta is being asked to brace for possible tornados. Environment Canada has issued a Tornado warning for the following areas:

  • Co. of Lethbridge near Picture Butte and Turin
  • M.D. of Taber near Grassy Lake and Hwys 877 and 513
  • M.D. of Taber near Taber and Barnwell
  • M.D. of Taber near Vauxhall and Hays

Alberta Emergency Alert says a tornado was spotted near Barnwell moving 60 km/h to the north.

Residents are being asked to take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.

“Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris,” Environment Canada said.
