Possible thunderstorms this afternoon, heat warning continues, Environment Canada says

MEDICINE HAT, AB- Environment Canada says there is a risk of a thunderstorm later this afternoon for Medicine Hat and Cypress County. The thunderstorm risk also extends into the city of Brooks, Lethbridge and Calgary.

Meantime a heat warning remains in effect for Medicine Hat, Cypress County and the city of Brooks. Temperatures are expected to reach 32 degrees in Medicine Hat and dip to a low of 16 degrees overnight. There is a 60 per cent chance of showers.

Environment Canada is advises the following to protect yourself from the heat.

– Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
– Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.
– Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
– Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.

Symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion include high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness.

Infants, children, seniors and people with pre-existing lung, heart , kidney, nervous system, mental heath, or diabetes health conditions are most at risk. Those who work outside, or who are socially isolated are also prone to the risks, according to Environment Canada.

The weather agency says heat warnings are issued when very high temperature conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
