Heat warning in effect for southeastern Alberta

Jun 11, 2020 | 3:49 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The southeast corner of the province is under a heat warning this afternoon, as the mercury is expected to rise to 32 C in the next 24 hours.

Overnight won’t offer much relief, either. Lows are forecasted to drop to only 16 C.

Temperatures are expected to stay high until the end of the weekend.

The heat warning is in effect for the Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield, Brooks,-Strathmore-Vulcan, Cypress Hills Provincial Park-Foremost, Hanna-Coronation-Oyen and Drumheller-Three Hills regions.

Environment Canada says people should consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day and take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.

Drinking plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages will help people stay hydrated and doublecheck for children or pets before leaving your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.

Pay attention for symptoms of heatstroke or heat exhaustion, such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness.

Infants, children, seniors, and individuals with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor workers are particularly vulnerable to high temperatures, as are those who are socially isolated.
