Medicine Hat hospital has long history of fund raising in the community

Jun 8, 2020 | 8:47 AM

Did you know that Medicine Hat’s original hospital, The Medicine Hat General Hospital, was funded almost entirely on donations? It was built between 1888-1890 and it was the only hospital between Vancouver and Winnipeg. The building of the hospital saved many lives and was only possible by the compassion of people wanting to make a difference. Compassionate people are the reason why the Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation was established in June 1996 under the authority of the Regional Health Authorities Act. The formation of the Health Foundation was in response to the growing need to provide public accountability for the management and distribution of all donations intended for the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and Community Health Services.

As a community, we have accomplished much together. Since inception, The Medicine Hat & District Health Foundation has received donations that total more than $16.1 million dollars. This money has been invested in equipment, room renovations, and community health service programs. Enhancing our local healthcare has an immeasurable significance and we would like to extend our sincerest “thank you” to our community. We could not do this without you.

Earlier this year we had been busy planning for our annual Dare to be There Gala. For the safety of our community, we cancelled the gala and decided to move forward in a different, and socially distant, manner. The Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation is proud to present our Dare to be There Silent Online Auction. Running from June 21st to June 30th and in support of our Bassinets for Babies campaign, the Dare to be There Silent Online Auction has many great items from local businesses.
