Jun 7, 2020 | 10:22 AM

MEDICINE HAT AB- The MHPS says the crisis negotiations team had to be called out early this morning after receiving a report of a man damaging property and threatening self-harm in the 300 block of 3rd St SE at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday.

The MHPS says officers tried to negotiate with the 28-year-old, who reportedly climbed onto a balcony and was threatening self-harm.

The MHPS says the crisis negotiations team spoke with the man for four and a half hours before the man eventually surrendered to police.

The 28-year-old man, police say, was believed to be under the influence of methamphetamine.

Police arrested the man, and transported him to the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, under the Mental Health Act.

The MHPS is reminding the public that mental health support during the COVID-19 pandemic is still available, and can be accessed through Alberta Health Services , Addictions and Mental health at 403-529-3500. Support options can also be found on their website.

The Canadian Mental Health Association is another resource for support and can be reached at 403-504-1811
