DUNMORE, AB – Though there was no formal ceremony this year, but the Eagle Butte High School Talons were able to celebrate the best their athletic program had to offer.

The Talons rolled out their 2020 award winners on social media Wednesday, highlighting the sporting achievements of students before COVID-19 shut everything down in March.

Volleyball star Montana Wright was the winner of three major awards taking home female athlete of the year, senior girls volleyball MVP alongside Tori Lunseth, and co-winning the Dave Rozdeba AAA Award with Azlin Ferguson.

Wright, a recent commit to the Medicine Hat College Rattlers program, competed in volleyball, cross country and track and field in her senior year with the Talons, and won bronze at provincials in javelin after setting a zone record.

It was a three-way split between William Baird, Gavin Derksen, and Aiden Heller for male athlete of the year meanwhile.

Baird became the first six-sport athlete in Talons history competing in cross country, badminton, rugby, baseball, track and field and volleyball, winning MVP in the latter sport.

His volleyball teammate Heller won the Talon Pride award for senior boys volleyball and also made provincials in both cross country and badminton, while Derksen was the school’s top finisher at cross country provincials in his age group and also competed in track and field, volleyball, and rugby.

Cross country senior girls MVP Ferguson and Wright split the Dave Rozdeba AAA Award, which is based on a combination of academics, athletics, and attitude according to the Talons.
