COVID-19 update: Province reports 18 new cases, no additional deaths

EDMONTON AB- The province is reporting 18 new cases of the virus today (May 31).

Recoveries have surged to a total of 6, 283 people across Alberta. . There are now only 584 remaining active cases in the province.

In the South Zone, the province says there are 42 active cases in the region and 1184 cases are now deemed as recovered.

In Medicine Hat, there are eight active cases and 33 recoveries.

The City of Brooks has 20 cases and 1068 recoveries. The death toll in the city stands at eight.

Newell County has 15 confirmed cases, one active and 14 recovered.

Nearby Cypress County has six active cases and eight cases listed as recovered.

In the city of Lethbridge the city has five active cases and eight recoveries. Lethbridge County has one confirmed case which has recovered.

The Municipal District of Taber and County of Forty Mile each reported two cases which have recovered.

The number of people who have died from the virus remains at 143, unchanged from Saturday’s update. The bulk of the deaths are in the Calgary zone at 104, followed by the North zone at 16, the Edmonton Zone at 13 , the South Zone at nine and the Central Zone with one death.

Starting tomorrow (June 1), the first stage of Alberta’s relaunch strategy will be fully active in the city of Brooks and Calgary, meaning day camps and worship services can begin if appropriate guidelines are followed. Reopening was delayed for the two cities because of their high infection rate.

Albertans can also begin to get their hands on free non-medical masks starting in the beginning of June at any A&W , McDonald’s and Tim Horton’s locations across the province.

The masks are available while supplies last, the province states.
