Latest Alberta COVID-19 update – All Albertans eligible for COVID-19 testing, 24 new cases, no new deaths

EDMONTON – Alberta’s chief medical officer announced Friday that all Albertans will now be able to get a COVID-19 test starting immediately in Calgary with the rest of the province to follow next week.

“Everybody who wants a test will be able to access one,” said Dr. Deena Hinshaw

Hinshaw says the province has conducted 250,000 tests for COVID-19, calling the feat an “incredible achievement” while crediting medical and clinical staff for the result compiled over the last three months.

Additionally, Brooks and Calgary will be able to complete their respective stage one reopening starting on Monday.

But the province’s chief doc put the kibosh on organized sports in the near future saying they continue to, “present a high risk of transmission,” specifically mentioning sports such as soccer, football and martial arts. Though, she added, singles badminton, tennis or skateboarding are acceptable activities.

Hinshaw said Albertans are tired of the constant reminding of safety protocols, restrictions to day-to-day activities, but, “the trouble is the virus has not disappeared.”

In the past day, 24 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Alberta with the province now having 616 active cases. No new deaths have been reported while 55 individuals have been hospitalized with four of those in intensive care.

In Medicine Hat and Brooks, there are eight and 22 active cases respectively with 33 and 1066 individuals recovered. Brooks has recorded eight deaths.

The County of Newell has 15 cases, one active and 14 recovered.

Cypress County is reporting 14 cases of COVID-19, six active and eight recovered – unchanged from the day before.

The County of Forty Mile and Municipal District of Taber each have two confirmed cases both listed as recovered, also unchanged

Special Areas No. 2 has two confirmed cases, one recovered and one death, unchanged as well.

The City of Lethbridge has 27 cases, seven listed as active and 20 recovered. Lethbridge County has one recorded recovered case.
