UPDATE: Police incident in Flats ends after standoff

May 28, 2020 | 3:02 PM

MEDICINE HAT – A standoff between an individual in a Ross Street residential home and Medicine Hat police has ended approximately two hours after it began around the noon hour on Thursday.

Numberous police in tactical gear and carrying rifles had the home surrounded while the MHPS armoured vehicle was also deployed.

A post on the CHAT News Facebook page allegedly from the individual inside the home indicated he’d been shot with a bean-bag round and had been injured.

It is believed the individual was arrested by police shortly after the post.

City police say the incident stemmed from an attempt to execute a search warrant involving allegations of importation and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Upon the attempt to arrest the man, he barricaded himself in the Ross Street home, according to police, and during an altercation with officers, was struck with a “police impact weapon” in the leg.”

Several weapons were seized and charges are pending.
