Province wants feedback on commercial rent challenges

May 25, 2020 | 2:38 PM

The Alberta government wants to hear from tenants and landlords about its efforts to keep businesses open and Albertans working during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A survey available on the government’s website will help officials understand the challenges faced as tenants and landlords develop a payment schedule for rent and other financial obligations as a result of the pandemic.

Tanya Fir, minister of economic development, trade and tourism, encourages landlords to apply for the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) program, and businesses to pay their rents as consistently as possible

“We expect businesses and landlords to work together in a respectful and fair manner during this challenging time,” Fir said. “This isn’t an easy time for anyone – but by working together, we will get through these tough times.”

The results of the survey will help the province to decide if more needs to be done to support struggling businesses.

The CECRA program offers owners forgivable loans to cover 50 per cent of the rent payments for three months, provided they reduce the tenants’ rent by 75 per cent. Applications were being accepted as of Monday morning.

The survey, and information on submitting feedback by other means in online at the Commercial tenancy support feedback page.
